Portfolio Excerpts |
I am writing with interest in job opportunties as urban designer or planner with an architecture/planning firm, a non-profit organization focusing on sustainability issues, or with a municipality or public planning agency. My work has focused on supervising the integration of urban design, neighborhood planning, and community planning and engaging community members in community, cultural, and economic development and redevelopment issues. Smart growth, sustainability, and new urbanism are areas of emphasis within my career and research. Most recently my work with Studio S27 and Main Street Ottumwa allowed me to engage the city planning process with real-world situations. Business improvement, design of the built environment, promotions, and organization of downtown were all prevalent in my daily work. My collaboration with Farr Associates on a textbook scheduled to be published by Wiley and Sons has given me the opportunity to become well-versed in sustainable urbanism standards for practitioners and designers alike. In addition, I spent three years as the founding Director of the Community Design Center for the University of Illinois’ Office of Public Engagement and Institutional Relations. To date, over $2.5 million has been spent on developing three CDC’s in Iowa alone, specifically based on the UIUC model. In addition, I have focused on informal and formal problem solving processes at the community planning scale within my doctoral work. My areas of expertise include program and project management, site design utilizing sustainable concepts, architectural rendering, downtown plan development, community visioning, and scenario building. Smart growth, sustainability, and new urbanism are areas of particular interest to me. Furthermore, I have had extensive experience in public relations and marketing in downtown redevelopment with various professional projects. Employment with emphasis on community vitality and growth specifically matches what I am searching for in a place to not only practice the art of building community but also working with a diverse range of professions in both the public and private sectors. I am looking to work with people who's mission closely meets what I value as an individual who has built their academic and professional career on helping people design, build, and sustain quality places and spaces. I intend on obtaining AICP within the calendar year. |
